Walking Horse Hotel
Wartrace, TN 37183
The Walking Horse Hotel is the location where Union Soldiers released many Confederate prisoners at the end of the Civil War. Many of these soldiers were extremely sick and malnourished and later on died inside the hotel. To extend the death toll at the hotel, in the 1970's, a Vietnam vet had a flashback and shot 4 hotel guests to death. The hotel remains very active with supernatural phenomena, including the sounds of gunshots, voices and walking and running footsteps throughout the hallways. The hotel has 13 rooms, room 11 is rumored to be the most active and those who have stayed inside have reported feelings of being watched.

I went ghost hunting at the walking horse hotel in wartrace three times. I have gotten E.V.P.s. I have been touched. There was a distinct odor of smoke and once there was the smell of rotting shrimp. It was strange because the odors would leave as quickly as they came a psychic who was on the phone with us picked up on a little boy playing with fire and paper that burned and died from his injuries. I can find no history of this happening. It makes me wonder if all things were kept recorded in those days in the early 1900's. It is a wonderful place to visit. Everyone is very friendly and helpful.

FALSE about Civil War soldiers dying there. The Civil War ended in 1865 and my great grandfather built the hotel in 1917 and was originally know as the Hotel Overall. I just wanted to set this part of the record straight. Thanks, Pat Overall Ray

I want to know if there is a story behind this hotel. Why I want to know the story is because I love stories to legends.

I swear this was the most haunted place I’d ever been to ! It felt as if the soldiers were standing right beside me ! At one point I heard loud screams coming from the room and the.n there were gunshots back to back and it seemed as if I could smell the sickness and gunshot residue! I NEVER Believed in ghost but this made me change my entire world around ghost hauntings!
